Napoleon did not create the coup against the Directory. He was brought into the coup as the muscle or military force that could insure success. The fact that he turned the tables on his fellow conspirators and won the seat as the First Consul was because while they were the Brains behind the coup, he went into it better prepared and with a possible Constitution which gained him the required majority. He was shrewd, brainy and had the troops to support him.
