Facing another war with Great Britain and in need of funds, Napoleon Bonaparte reversed his thoughts of a new French Empire in the Americas and sold the entire colony.
The Louisiana Territory was a French claimed one that was double the size of the US. Napoleon was willing to sell it for a few reasons. He believed that he could not protect it, and sooner or later either the US or the British ( especially New Orleans ) would control it. He therefore decided to sell it for the money and it helped him to prepare for a new try at being the strongest world power.
He needed cash to continue his European War.
Because France was at war with just about everyone in Europe, France had no need for a huge colony in North America, and he needed 15 million dollars.
