The loss of forts Henry and Donelson forced the Confederates to evacuate Nashville, Tennessee. The city was a huge asset for the South. With the exception of New Orleans, Nashville was the largest and most important city south of the Ohio River. It occupied a strategic position on the Cumberland River. The city had extensive railway connections, a giant arsenal, two powder mills and a supply depot. Its factory turned out 100,000 percussion caps a day. The Nashville Plow Works produced sabers, and other factories created rifled guns.
