∙ 8y ago"Wanted' may be too strong a word. New Zealand never had been claimed by any nation. Australia had been claimed by the British, who used it - especially the part called New South Wales - mostly as a penal colony. In 1788 the document appointing a new Governor for New South Wales simply included the territories of New Zealand as part of that colony. Some 60 years later New Zealand was made a separate colony, although from the very beginning on it had a high degree of autonomy and Britain left it mostly alone.
