Nunney Castle was a fortified house in the french style. It would have been a strongpoint in the middle ages and the centre of the community. Despite being moated & having a small river nearby, by the time of the English Civil War it was hoplessly indefencible to artillery, as hills overlook the castle. In short, the castle was originally built as a local strongpoint & is best regarded as a fortified house rather than a castle as such. Parliamentary gunpowder was its undoing.
