The Japanese feared American would join The Allies in WWII (World War 2), so they wanted to attack us before we attacked them. At that time, the U.S.A only had a few Aircraft Carriers (it was between 3 and 5) and they were all located at pearl harbor. The Japanese generals believed that if they could destroy those aircraft carriers (which are ships that can carry hundreds of jets, planes, bombs, and fire power) they could cripple America enough so that they could not interfere with their plans. Luckily (or by some unknown act of heroism), those aircraft carriers were not in pearl harbor when it was attacked. They were out doing some practice drills. They were informed of that attack though, and were told to stay away from pearl harbor (well, they were told to travel away, because there was the possibility of the Japanese airfleet coming that direction).

i also heard that 1 or 2 of the carriers were still in the harbor and were destroyed.
