Katniss knew that only one tribute would come out alive out of the 24 and so did Peeta. She wanted as little to do with Peeta because she would either have to kill him herself or some one else would kill him and it would be harder for her to cope with his loss if she was close friends with him. Also, she had a sneaky suspicion that Peeta was only playing nice as a tactic, and that he was just getting her to like him.

Throughout the whole series, her attitude changes. When Peeta announces his love for her publicly at the interview, Katniss has no choice but to play "star-crossed lovers" in the arena to win over the audience. They kiss many times, but there was one time when Katniss feels something stir in her, possibly love. She feels that love again for Peeta in the second and third books, and eventually it develops into a relationship. At the end of the series, she realizes that it is not Gale she needs, powered by fiery rage, but the hope, the boy with the bread, Peeta. They get married and have two children. <3 I just love Peeta and through the whole series I was rooting for him. Just finished the last book today!
