Pony Boy is focused on most throughout the novel and therefore the author has wanted us to go along with his values and beliefs. The protagonist is usually the main character, and the main character in the Outsiders is Pony Boy.

His hair was a symbol of the greasers and what they believed in. While the Socs, the big shots, had the symbols of the madras shirt, the corvair, and blue mustang, the greasers had their own symbol of greasy long hair. Pony also thought it made him look "tuff". He worked a very long time to get his hair long and the way he wanted it.

The reason why Ponyboy was complaining about his haircut was that it was his pride. Two-Bit's pride is his blade, if he loses it, how might it affect him? Compare that with Ponyboy.

Why is cutting off hair such a major step for Ponyboy?

Cutting off his hair is a major step for Ponyboy because it symbolizes a break from the social expectations and identity he associates with his greaser appearance. It signifies his desire to distance himself from the violence and stereotypes associated with his gang. Additionally, the act of cutting his hair could also be seen as a form of rebellion and self-discovery as he navigates his own path apart from the constraints of his environment.
