Russia has an abundance of resources that foreign conquerors have coveted for centuries and few natural barriers between themselves and their neighbors.

Resources include fertile land, a large population, and vast reserves of timber. Many cities, such as Novgorod, were renowned for their riches generated by trade.

More recently other raw materials including oil, coal, natural gas, and various metals have made Russia a prospective target for hostile enemies such as the Nazis and Japanese.
