When CA became a state in 1850 it was a primary city in the state and had been for several years. John Sutter got a land grant from Mexico to build a fort and that was the central point of entry by settlers. It soon grew into a fairly large city that allowed easy access to San Francisco by using the Sacramento River to the bay and access to the gold fields. When John C. Fremont and his men took the Mexican governor hostage they took him to Sutter's Fort in Sacramento and declared the Bear Flag Republic. Fremont had made a deal with Sutter that when the republic was declared he would be able to keep his fort and land. What no one counted on was the gold rush 2 years later. Sutter lost everything in the gold rush, but Sacramento was still an important city for the state.
