Catherine of Alexandria was made a saint for her steadfast devotion to her Christian faith, her intellect, and her refusal to renounce her beliefs. She is also considered a martyr for her faith as she was executed for refusing to worship pagan gods. Many miracles were attributed to her intercession after her death, leading to her canonization as a saint in the Catholic Church.

St. Catherine of Siena was one of the most luminous saints that ever graced the calendar. She lived on a short 35 years, existing for many years on no food, only the Blessed Sacrament. She was a mystic, and a very prolific letter writer, 400 of her letters are still extant today. She also survived on practically no sleep, sleeping only for 30 minutes or so every other day. Her Dialogues are well worth reading. She was one of the most brilliant theological minds of the Church, despite no education, and has been named a doctor of the Church. For the story of her life and canonization, see the link below:

Saint Catherine was not canonized. She was proclaimed a saint by early

Christians because of her martyrdom. The canonization process did not

come into existence until the 12th century. In the primitive Church,

martyrs were immediately recognized as witnessing to the perfection of

Christian life on earth, having shown the ultimate proof of their love for

Christ by the offering of their lives. By the sacrifice of their lives

for Christ, they attained Heaven in eternal glory and were indissolubly

united to the Lord, the Head of the Mystical Body.

Saint Catherine lived a very holy and pious life and was martyred for her Christian beliefs by beheading about the year 305 in Alexandria, Egypt. Her martyrdom lead those who knew her to declare her as a saint and that would have been approved, possibly by a bishop. There was no formal procedure for canonization at the time.

Catherine was removed from the Church's Calendar of Saints and her cult suppressed several years back because much of what is known about her is based entirely on legend. In 2002 she was again returned to the Calendar of Saints when additional evidence was found.

Catherine was never canonized. She was declared a saint by popular acclamation soon after her martyrdom and is known as a pre-congregation saint. The official process of canonization did not fully exist until the 12th century. Now only the pope can declare a saint after a thorough investigation by the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

However, in 2002 Pope John Paul II reinstated her to the Calendar of Saints when a diary of Catherine was found in Ethiopia which verified many of the legends about her. A movie on her life based on this diary is scheduled to be released in 2014.
