AnswerHe was convicted of treason and beheaded at the behest of King James.
Raleigh was executed by beheading on 29th October 1618, in the grounds of the Palace of Westminster. He was 65 years old.
Only a few months after the death of Queen Elizabeth 1st in 1603, he was arrested by King James 1st on charges of treason, after having been accused of being involved in the 'Main Plot' against the King ( an alleged conspiracy by leading members of Court to depose James and replace him with his cousin, Arabella Stuart). He conducted his own defence at his trial with great skill, and despite being found Guilty by the Crown Court, King James commuted his death sentence to one of indefinite detention in the Tower of London. Here he remained for the next 13 years, during which time he wrote several books on history, seafaring and navigation.
King James released him in in 1616 to conduct a raid on Venezuela in Central America against the Spanish outposts there, to search for the mythical Inca land of El Dorado ('Land of Gold'). It resulted in the destruction of the Spanish garrison of Santo Tome de Gayuama, with many Spanish soldiers killed- Raleigh's son Walter was also killed after being shot by a Spanish Marine. Upon his return to England, the Spanish Ambassador, Count Gondomar, expressed his fury at the expedition, and demanded that in revenge Raleigh's death sentence be reinstated, to which the King agreed. This was unfair to the point of treachery- the King knew perfectly well what the probable results of Raleigh's expedition would be, and the famous Admiral was, after all, only obeying orders.
After his execution, Raleigh's head was embalmed and presented to his wife, whilst his body was entombed at St. Margaret's Church in Westminster. After the death of Lady Raleigh in 1647, her husband's head was reunited with it's body in his tomb- the tomb can still be visited today.
