Sparta's population was mostly slaves, and their economy depended on slave labor. A slave revolt would certainly be economically devastating, and there was a distinct chance that the slaves would win and overthrow the Spartan government, so obviously this was always something Sparta was worried about.

The Spartans were feared so much because they trained from age 7 to become warriors. Their government was a oligarchy, which proved to be very affective for them. Also, a mere 300 of them held off 2000 Persian foot soldiers in the Persian Wars while the Athenian troops retreated to safer ground. Over all, the Spartans were the fighting superpower of there era.

The requirements to become a Spartiate meant that there were always only a few of them and they could not easily be replaced if they should die. This is why they were reluctant to go to war, whole they could probably win it could be decades before they could reach their full strength again.

In spite of their reputation as terrific warriors and their city's image as a big army camp, the Spartans only reluctantly fought wars.

The Spartains were such an effective force because they were trained to function as a unit..they were so well trained that they knew how to function as a whole...they defeated their adversaries as a group rather than by fighting one on one

One was their brevity of speech - when Lysander captured Athens, he sent back a message to Sparta 'Athens is taken'. He got back a message 'Taken would have been enough'. A word we use today is laconic which means brevity of speech - Laconia was the land of the Spartans.

The other thing was their fighting ability. In one confrontation with another city, both sides agreed to put forward only two hundred warriors each to avoid the slaughter of a full scale battle. At the end of it there was one Spartan and tow opposition standing. The two went tome boasting of victory. The Spartan stripped the bodies of the fallen opposition of armour, and the Spartans claimed victory, as only the victor could be capable of doing that.

The Sparta were the best warriors in the world when they existed. In the Battle of Thermopylae, 300 of them (and 700 other soldiers) almost defeated 200,000 Persians.
