Stephen F Austin is responsible for the first legal and successful colonization of Texas (second attempt) in 1825. He brought 300 families to Texas and acquired land rights and helped colonize the Texas frontier.

Also he helped form the first Texas Militia that would eventually become the Texas Rangers. Ranger history dates this as the founding of their organization.
