Some theories say that it was built as a ceremonial altar for their polytheistic religion. Others say that it was a burial ground or a holy site that people made pilgrimages to. Some say that it was built to mark astronomical events. Still others say that aliens built it, but that is not very likely. It also may have been a combination of two or more of the above reasons, but not much proof has been uncovered to support any one theory.
