I don't think there was a reason. The author just imagine him that way.
Beacuse he was described as an old man with a long beard.
The Giver stays in the Community, after Jonas leaves with Gabriel. The Giver helps the Community deal with all of the new memories and feelings they have received, because when Jonas left, all the memories he got from The Giver were released into the Community.
That is a very good question. The receiver before Jonas, the Giver, is very mysterious. However, we know that he helped Jonas and Gabriel escape to Elsewhere. I do not know the Giver's name. But we know that he is old because the title shows him as an old man.
Gabe is going to be killed (But Jonas takes him and leaves the community)
It's the man in The Giver who gives Jonas his memories from the past. When Jonas is picked to be the Receiver, he goes through training with the Giver (before Jonas escapes with Gabriel). In the book, he is described as old with a long beard and pale eyes.
The old man feels lighter because he is no longer burdened by the memories and emotions of the past that the Giver has taken away from him. This allows him to experience a sense of freedom and relief from the weight of his pain and suffering.

In the book "The Giver" by Lois Lowry, the protagonist, the Giver, is not explicitly mentioned as being married. The focus of the story is primarily on the relationship between the Giver and Jonas, the main character.
