Why was Thomas Jefferson more famous for writing the Declaration of Independence than being President of America?

While every American school child is taught about the Declaration, and most Americans can recite the first few lines, fewer people can list every pre-WWII president, Jefferson included (though Washington and Lincoln have a special place in many hearts). Also remember that while the Declaration was the first formal statement of the ideals on which the country is based, the Louisiana Purchase merely doubled the size of the country. Important, but not quite on the same level.
