Grant knew about being a quartermaster and he did not complain about his supplies. He got his orders in early and clearly and made do with what he had.

The Congressman from Illinois who got him back into the army helped him get promoted. Lincoln liked him because he was not afraid to attack the enemy and he won. Also, he unassuming and modest and kept Lincoln informed as much as he wanted to be.
