The Treaty of Versailles, which ended WWI is often said to be the staging for WWII. The Treaty of Versailles, in retrospect, can be said to be very punitive toward the Germans. They had to: 1. Admit full responsibility for the war. 2. Pay war reparations which amounted to $393 billion U.S. dollars 3. Give up all colonies among other things. This angered the Germans and resentment grew. It became especially bad during the Great Depression when the German's suffered, as did the rest of the world on top of trying to make the reparations payments. Hitler offered the German people a 'way out.'
