Virginia was founded as an English colony under a charter from King James I in 1606, which only specified "propagation of the English faith." The London Company was responsible for recruiting colonists, who would be tenants of the Crown-claimed lands.

The first settlement was at Jamestown in 1607, but was nearly abandoned in 1610 until supplies and new colonists arrived. Eventually the settlers were granted ownership of their land, and the growth of the tobacco trade brought revenue to the colony.
