Although the original quarrel was between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, their allies used to opportunity to settle their ongoing competition for land and resources.
- Russia interceded on behalf of Serbia, and to protect their interests in Poland and eastern Europe.
- Germany sought to gain resources in its struggle to achieve parity with Great Britain.
- France and Britain declared war because of their treaties with Russia. Britain also had a long-standing treaty with Belgium, which was invaded by Germany.
- Italy originally allied with Austria and Germany in the Triple Alliance. But under a secret agreement with Britain, Italy joined the Entente powers in 1915, only to suffer a disastrous defeat at the hands of the Austrians and Germans.
World War I was not truly a world war, as almost 100% of the fighting took place in Europe. However, battles did take place in Asia and the Middle East as Japan overtook German colonies and Arabs revolted against the Ottoman Empire. Also, European countries used their colonies during the war, where they provided men and resources to the war. WWI first became a world war during the Gallipoli Campaign, where, for example, Australians (under the British flag) were fighting against Turks in Europe.
