The Greeks were worshipers of nature, but worship of the Sun was most prevalent. Zeus as a figure is important because he is the personification of the heavens (in which the sun, moon and other deities must exist). He represents a shift from the common ideal of the chief god being representative of the Sun. In fact, his name shares a common origin with the Greek word "theos - God" and the Latin word "Deus - God" as well as the Latin word "Dies - Day".
