The first working television was invented by John Logie Baird of Helensburgh, Scotland in 1925.

An all-electronic moving-image television system somewhat similar to that used today was invented and demonstrated in 1929 by Philo Farnsworth. Designs and patents for electro-mechanical television systems had been proposed as early as 1884 by German student Paul Gottlieb Nipkow but never built; and a workable version of a static image television system (what we would now call a "scanner") was demonstrated in 1909 by French scientists Fornier and Rignoux. Various scanner-quality devices were developed over the next 20 years, culminating in Farnsworth's 1929 triumph of moving-image television.

While there were a number of experimental TV systems in operation during 1929-1946, true commercial television broadcasting was delayed by the difficulty of developing a sensitive enough TV camera tube, and by the onset of World War II. In 1946, scientists at the laboratories of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) developed the Image Orthocon Tube, which finally made broadcast-quality TV cameras possible.

1. To promote the study, technology, sports, advertisements, news right to your home, TV becomes a member of our family, even in the remote areas of the world, today people are watching and enjoying different events on the television.

2. For distance education where rare facilities are available for the remote, they can take huge advantage by not traveling to physical on premise schooling or where the facilities are not available or some of them could not go to school, or their education was interrupted TV is the advantage for them.

3. We know the hearing impact is lesser than the viewing impact of information, hence there was a great need to invent both picture and sound, after the scientist Marconi, the world changed and accepted the TV.

4. Boring times? TV can entertain and inform.
Television was the next logical step beyond radio. People used to sit around and listen to radio sitcoms like we watch TV shows. The next logical step beyond being able to only hear them was being able to see them.

There were many people striving to add pictures to the radio services that were being introduced around the world. Radio was the first medium to allow instant communication to large numbers of people. Television would be the next big step.

At the time, moving images were restricted to movie theaters and even important news involved a delivery process that took days or even weeks. The television would deliver the same images right into homes.

There is a view that television was the work of government with a plan to use it for military communication and to control the public. In fact, those who worked on television were ignored by governments and big businesses alike. Whatever use governments may have made of television, none can claim to have inspired or supported its invention.

When John Logie Baird unveiled the world's first working television in 1925, there was a great sense of ambition around the Western world. Engineers and inventors had turned electricity into a useful tool for homes and industry, construction and engineering had been greatly refined over the previous three or four decades and a belief that anything could be achieved was held by the engineers like Baird. The invention was perhaps inspired as much by the desire to achieve the invention as for a specific purpose.

Among the aims held by the early pioneers of television, some of these are likely:

  • It was a way of communicating life ideas.
  • For entertained by actors and performers
  • The TV can be used for education
  • Television was invented for the advancement of society. Although some say it is often used in a detrimental way, the inventors would have seen more positive results in their mind as they worked on the technology.
  • Television was invented to give you a way to be informed of what is going on around you.
  • John Logie Baird who is the "inventor of the world's first working television" obviously saw that visual communication was required, the next step after Marconi had invented Radio. No doubt, Phil Farnsworth who also played a key part in the development of television had similar thoughts.

Television was the next logical step beyond radio. People used to sit around and listen to radio sitcoms like we watch TV shows. The next logical step beyond being able to only hear them was being able to see them.

There were a number of individuals who were determined to produce a system of broadcasting moving images in the early part of the twentieth century. Notable names are:

Nipkow - A German inventor who developed a rotating disc to break an image down to a stream of electrical signals. This was the basis for the first television system but Nipkow never actually made a working disc and in fact, never considered it for use with moving images, just static images.

John Logie Baird - The Scottish inventor who demonstrated the world's first television in London in 1925.

Philo Farnsworth - An American who worked on a similar system to Baird but also produced the first television system with no mechanical parts.

All three and many others who made contributions to television worked on their ideas because they were obsessed with them. Necessity or obsession are vital parts of most inventions and the television was no exception. Each one was driven to develop electronically transmitted images although it is probably reasonable to guess than none thought their inventions would so dominate the world.
