The US has an area norht of San Francisco, California which is known as "Silicon Valley" where many of the world's largest technology corporations are located. The term originally referred to the region's large number of silicon chip innovators and manufacturers, but eventually came to refer to all the high-tech businesses in the area.

The "Silicon Glen" is so named by analogy to Silicon Valley. A glen is a Scottish term for a narrow, deep valley in the Highlands. The term "Silicon Glen" has been in use since the 1980s. It does not technically represent a glen as it covers a much wider area than just one valley, but it does encompass the region where most of the high-tech companies are located in Scottland.
