Theatre and acting all started way back in ancient Greece as a form of ritual, and actually, the whole thing is derived from Sacrifice. Way, way back, the Greeks used to sacrifice humans, but then they realized that really wasn't the most convenient thing to do, so they said, "you know what? maybe the Gods won't mind if we start sacrificing goats instead." In fact, that is where Greek tragedy came from. Tragedy is actually the English Translation of Tragos, which actually means "goat song." Anyways, the ceremony of sacrificing the goat was very ritualistic, and soon, the Greeks decided that it was too messy to sacrifice the goats, so they turned to just acting out the ceremony. Basically, from there, the whole thing just evolved. From when it was just a ritual, to when it transformed into stories with religios morals, into purely entertainment, acting has been a part of all civilizations and probably always will be.
