Alcatraz was built on a small island in the middle of San Francisco bay, which has very cold water, with strong tides heading out to sea, and some sharks swimming around it. It is a good place for a maximum security prison, and only 3 people Might have escaped from it alive. (They were Never heard of again, so they Probably Died in the escape attempt and their bodies were not recovered). It was too expensive to maintain it, so it was shut down, and a new, less expensive, maximum security prison was built.
