Because knowledge of the Lord was so wide spread and the scholars of the time were attempting to keep accurate records of history they designed the calendar to show time as BC, (before Christ), and AD, ('Anno Domini' which is Medieval Latin which means ' in the year of our Lord'). Interesting note there is no '0' it goes from 1 B.C. to 1 A.D.
