Benedict Arnold was important because he was capable of winning battles. In 1775, he captured Fort Ticonderoga. He held off the British at Lake Champlain, and was the savior in the Battle of Saratoga. Unfortunately, he was passed over time and again, and others took credit for his success. Appointed to defend West Point, he wound up defecting to the British after it was discovered he was going to surrender the fort to them. He is known mainly as being a traitor, but without his earlier success when loyal, the United States may not be here today.
