Actually, the word is notorious, NOT famous: Edward Teach (circa 1680 - November 22, 1718), better known as Blackbeard, purposely had his large black beard braided into pigtails with colorful ribbons tied in -for looks. He was described in 1724 as 'such a figure that imagination cannot form an idea of a fury from hell to look more frightful' -End quote- The same writer furthers this description in times of battle: 'a sling over his shoulders, with three braces (pairs) of pistols hanging in holsters like bandoliers...'
He was granted pardon from England, yet furthered his piratical 'career'.
His crews served willingly, unlike most pirate crews.
There are NO VERIFIABLE accounts of his having ever murdered or harmed those he held captive.
As Captain of Queen Anne's Revenge, he shivered her timbers at Topsail Inlet.
