In Islam, any form of art that depicts a living creature such as a person or animal, by painting, drawing, sculpute, etc. is forbidden. So instead of having these things displayed in the home, muslims make beautiful calligraphic drawings of verses of the Quran to display. The nature of the Arabic alphabet also is very condusive to calligraphy and they take pride in making it look beautiful, especially when writing Quranic verses.
