Cotton was important to the south because during the civil war that is all the south had. They didn't have big factories to make guns. The south wanted to use cotto to lure England and France into a military alliance. This was also called the cotton diplomacy.

Well, Eli Whitney ( the inventor of the cottin gin) made the cottin gin to help the slaves but it really backfired on him and made the slaves have to work harder. Really the cottin gin didn't really pick cotton it cleaned the seeds. So the cottin gin was soooo important because, when the masters made them work it would speed up the work so that the masters could tell the slaves to work more and do the work harder.

Cotton was important to the entire USA in the days of antebellum. Cotton was 50% of all US exports in 1860. Northern textile mills needed cotton and so did England. It's importance cannot be overestimated.
