Hillbilly is the slang term for people who live in rural, mountainous areas of the southern US, especially in the Ozark and Appalachian Mountains.
These mountains were settled by Scots-Irish people, and the terms "hill-folk" and "billy" to mean bloke or fellow were common among those people when the country was settled.
The stereotype of the hillbilly as inbred, ignorant, and violent has made this term a derogatory insult now, though some people who live in the mountains call themselves hillbillies as a joke. Hillbillies are thought to make moonshine and constantly feud between clans, have huge families, and eat road-kill.
In all honesty, the velyr must admit that their Grandfather did transport moonshine during the depression, raise 15 children, and has been known to eat opossum.
