The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was perpetrated by what may be loosely described as Yugoslavian patriots. Willingly committing violence in order to achieve their political ends, and with the support of officials from the independent nation of Serbia, the patriot-assassins sought to intimidate the Austro-Hungarian Empire into making territorial concessions that would lead to the formation of an independent Yugoslavia.
