How did the land affect the Battle of Gettysburg?

There were a series of hills around the area, which dominated the landscape. Which army controlled the heights would control the battlefield, and the Union army managed to hold the high ground.

The Union got hold of the high ground, and was able to defend it against the rebel assaults.The rebels made ground and won the first day of battle, but on the second day when they tried to flank the the Union Army on Little Round top and almost won but ultimately lost that day because Colonial Chamberlain of the 20th Maine ordered them to charge down hill with Bayonets. The next day, General Robert E Lee of the Confederate Army knowing that they would be heavily guarded on the flanks ordered his men to charge for the middle of the Union Army, this would be known as Pickett's charge and would result in the death of 60% of Pickett's men and an all out loss for the Confederate Army in this battle.
