Why was it difficult to recruit and keep soldiers for the Continental Army?

Many men did not want to fight because they saw no chance of winning in fighting the 'best' army and navy in the world. Also, the soldiers were under harsh conditions sometimes, especially in the winter with shortages of food and warm clothes.
