It was very difficult. A proper answer would be a very long one but I'll provide a few key events/concepts that really brought the revolutionary effort together.

Most of the colonies had widely varying forms of self-government (lower houses: House of Burgesses), different styles of electing local representatives, and different goals (slavery and agriculture in southern colonies, manufacturing and export in the north).
