Mary was a young woman - probably just a teenager. She was pregnant and unable to provide for herself, in a society where unmarried mothers were shunned, and sometimes even stoned for fornication. To protect both mother and baby, Mary needed to be married to a loving man who would protect, nuture and provide for them both. God sent Joseph to her aid.
