First of all the majority of the population couldn't read or write. Also it was very difficult of produce a book since it had to be hand written and then there was only one copy. Next, the Church censored all work so if it didn't follow thee thinking of the church it was banned. Most of the books that were produced were done by the church and monks who sat for years creating one work. Paper and ink were very expensive as well. Until the printing press was invented there were no books like we have today. The first book printed was The Bible.
