When Sir George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore converted to Catholicism, the Virginia authorities ordered him to leave. He then appealed to King Charles I for a charter on the north shore of the Chesapeake Bay. Lord Baltimore died before the charter for Maryland was approved. It was finally granted to his son and Maryland was first created as a refuge for Catholics.
