It was an ugly place to live in, always on the brink of devastation by floods or droughts, and devastated by regular wars (all a bit like today - not much has changed). In the good years there was plenty of food, which allowed the surplus to underpin the development of civilisation, which lifted the living standards - a lot for the aristocracy, a bit for the underclass.
