He did not do his homework to check what kind of winters Russia has encountered, so he sent his Army unprepared , under nourished and ill clothed, once he got there eventually, the Russians had burned the city and took all the food, so now he only had a starving army, no proper clothing and a very harsh winter to contend with, it knocked out 3/4 of his troops that really never recovered.
