The syndrome is named after a character in the Charles Dickens novel, The Pickwick Papers, who seemed to show some of the traits of this disease. Joe, a "fat red-faced boy," was always hungry, short of breath, and would fall asleep in the middle of performing tasks (narcolepsy from sleep apnea).
