Actually poisons were discovered (not invented) by our ancestors long before recorded history, probably even before our ancestors became modern humans.
In the course of gathering foods (e.g. berrys, roots, grains, fruit, mushrooms) some items were collected that could be eaten but were toxic. Our ancestors soon learned which made them sick or killed them and called them poisonous.
