The Mississippi was vital to the US economy in those days.It connected the what was then Western US with the Atlantic Ocean. Roads were poor and there were not many of them. Waterways were the only practical way to ship for longer distances. He certainly hated the idea that New Orleans might be controlled by an unfriendly power and he had no reason to trust the British or the Spanish or even the French who had overthrown their king since they helped us in the Revolution.
