In 1868 Queen Isabella of Spain was deposed and there was some argument about the Prussian candidate for the vacant throne. Insults were passed between the Prussian King and the French Ambassador. Public opinion was in uproar so that on the 19th July 1870 France declared war on Prussia only, although the other German states joined in. The German armies defeated France and the war came to an end on the 10th May 1871
