although, the Arthur Shai Agnon- a Jewish-Israeli who won a literature Nobel prize- used to describe sexual interactions with "sharing a meal". it has nothing to do with ancient Jews, but maybe that's why you had that in mind.

For the same reasons that it still is. Sharing a meal is relevant to family and community bonding, and to acts of kindness (when food is shared with the poor).
