they were afraid of the sirens that haunted the oceans and the crazy dog-like monsters that ruled the seas, they were said to take sailors from right off the ship and drag them down the their underwater caves, then eat only the brains and intestines and bring the bodies back up to the ships.
In the age of exploration only the rich had proper education and the poor had some education. Most of Columbus crew thought the world was flat and they would fall of the face of the earth they also thought the sea contained monsters so they were afraid of that also.
He wasn't scared of them. He wrote in his journal that they would make good slaves, he thought they weren't very smart, and needed to be converted to the Catholic religion. When one man brought him a few gold nuggets he cut his hand off. Columbus was a greedy mean man, but not afraid of the Native population he met.
