Super Bowl XXXVI was played in Feburary of 2002 as scheduled. However, the two week period between the end of the playoffs and Super Bowl XXXVI was shortened to a single week. So while it appears that the game was played a week late, the Super Bowl was actually played as scheduled. The reason why most people believe that it was rescheduled was becaouse of the 9/11 attacks. September 11, 2001 was the date when three airliners, hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists, flew into the Twin Towers in New York City, The Pentagon in Alexandria Virginia and a fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed in suburban Pennsylvania (after the heroes of Flight 93 tried to retake command of the plane from the hijackers). In total 2,998 people died (excluding the hijackers) and another 6,291 people were injured in the attacks.
