It was a trade that was portable, just take your apron, headband and small hand tools and move to the next city. It was also a trade that was much needed everywhere. Awnings, tents, leather products needed to be made or repaired. Paul being the consummate missionary evangelist, could also interact with those he worked with, his customers, his supply chain, his delivery people etc. allowing him to spread the Gospel in an efficient way. There is even a bible passage where he is found preaching while wearing his work clothes, which are then taken to the sick and they were healed.

Today's profession that has similar qualities is teaching English as a second language. Jobs are everywhere, it allows face to face interaction with many levels of society, their households, their kids etc.
