Because of an attack on nearby Curacao by a Venezuelan rebel leader, the Kingdom of the Netherlands started up the Aruban military, Arubaanse Militie [ARUMIL], in 1929. Prior to that year, military forces were scarcely present on Aruba and other Dutch Caribbean islands. On June 28, 1929, Rafael Simon Urbina [1897-November 13, 1950] attacked Curacao and briefly took hostages, including Governor Leonardus Albert Fruytier [1882-1972].
As a result of this surprise attack, the Netherlands decided to establish a permanent naval ship ['stationsschip'] in the Netherlands Antilles and to establish volunteer defense corps on Curacao [Vrijwilligerskorps Curacao, VKC] and Aruba [Vrijwilligerskorps Aruba, VKA]. After World War II, both volunteer defense corps were renamed Antiliaanse Militie [ANTMIL]. When Aruba became autonomous in 1986, ANTMIL on Aruba was renamed Arubaanse Militie [ARUMIL].
